- That cities and villages are submerged, and buildings, fields and wealth are swept away byy natural floods, is something that can be accepted with much sorrow, lessons and morals, in addition to recording observations abort the role of the concerned parties in preparing for disasters. However, that politics and its disputes, and the differences between politicians play a role in exacerbating the effects of natural phenomena, this is what makes the wound deeper and more painful, and this is what happened in Libya recently..
More than 16 thousand people were killed or missing within a few hours due to the collapse of the dam 12 kilometers from Derna, sending water behind it down towards the city located in the heart of the valley, towards the second dam to catch up with the previous one that has not been maintained for 12 years, the age of war and fighting, and the great neglect of everything that would protect the citizen.
How can the afflicted look around and not find rescue teams or trained rescuers, as it has been confirmed that training operations have been limited to carrying weapons and fighting since the collapse of the state.
Derna, which is 250 km east of Benghazi, was separated according to eyewitnesses into two parts, with a divider between them that completely obliterated all its buildings, people, and other means of life.
The International Meteorological Organization, confirming what politics did in Libya, stated that “the disaster could have been avoided if there was an institution working in the water sector in Libya.” However… the dogs barked, instinctively announcing the occurrence of the disaster, and the officials did not pay attention. Hurricane Daniel had sent warnings across the sea when Greece was affected, but the officials did not move a finger, as it was possible to activate precautionary measures that would reduce the losses.
The disaster occurred, the crowds of the afflicted were in a turmoil, and the satellite channels broadcast the image, and despite this, the officials did not move except to the extent that they obstructed the rescue efforts for political reasons.
Who is responsible for spreading terror, despair, anger, failure, and neglect?
In Tobruk, neighborhoods and buildings were sinking before the eyes of survivors who fled to the top of buildings, and even among them there were those who were crushed by buildings to join the lists of the missing and dead.
Social media published hundreds of stories of shock and astonishment, pain and injustice, to the point of demanding an investigation into the disaster.
Floods sweep everything into the sea, swallowing buildings and furniture, and throwing up bodies on the shores to remind people of the depth of the disaster.
And because taking does not always come without giving, are there any gains from what happened?
They told us that floods support the soil with nutrients, when the silt reaches large areas, which prepares the ground for agriculture. They also help improve ecosystems, especially with the introduction of new predators and prey among the inhabitants of the water, which achieves more balance. So what gains can we expect to be announced after the Libya flood disaster, on top of what it did in exposing the hand of destructive politics?
