Finance Minister participates in the meeting of the Finance Ministers of the Horn of Africa in Addis Ababa

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Gibril Ibrahim, participated in the Horn of Africa Initiative meetings held in Addis Ababa – Ethiopia on (
18 February, which aims at discussing joint projects of member states.

In his speech, the Minister stressed the importance of economic integration and joint movement to enhance the capabilities of the countries of the region, and to benefit from the historical relations and demographic structure that unite them to achieve the desired integration, announcing that Sudan, with its abundant natural capabilities, is qualified to achieve food security for the region; pointing out the importance of increasing Sudan’s opportunities to benefit within the African system from the financing available through the African Development Bank to finance vital sectors and employ their comparative advantages for the benefit of the countries of the region. He stressed the importance of integrating efforts to push forward joint projects in the fields of roads and railways to benefit from Sudan’s strategic location to connect the continent to the world and stimulate foreign trade through its seaports, pointing to the importance of joint projects in the field of water and electricity and the need for Sudan to benefit from the electricity in Ethiopia and for the countries of the region to benefit from the natural opportunities for clean and environment friendly energies; pointing to the importance of joint efforts to address the risks of climate change and its negative repercussions on the Horn of Africa.
The Minister expressed Sudan’s desire to support its efforts to end the war due to its negative impact on regional peace and the stability of the countries of the region.
He reviewed the indicators of progress achieved by Sudan during the previous period despite its known circumstances, pointing to Sudan’s recent deliberate exclusion from regional platforms despite its efforts to be effective within the African system.
For their part, the participants in the initiative table affirmed their support for Sudan in the reconstruction phase by participating in vital projects that link the countries of the Horn of Africa such as energy, water, roads and railways.
It is noteworthy that the initiative was attended by the finance ministers of the Horn of Africa, representatives of the IGAD organization, Türky, Britain, the European Union and the United States of America.
