Darfur government, AcoGaps organize food security seminar

The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Darfur Region Government, in cooperation with the African Center for Governance, Peace and Transition Studies (AcGaps) , held a seminar entitled: Achieving food security in emergency conditions, under the patronage of Commander Minni Arko Minnawi, Governor of the Darfur Region, in the presence of Dr. Muhammad Bashar, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance for Planning – Chairman of the Technical Committee for Food Security and Supervision, Mr. Salah Hamed Ismail, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources in the region, with the participation of Dr. Abla Malik, Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
For his part, Dr. Mahmoud Zain Al-Abidine, Director General of AcoGaps, pointed out the Center’s interest in economic studies and issues.
The Center has established the Food Security Forum in Sudan annually, and this year comes at the initiative of Mr. Salah Hamid, Minister of Agriculture in the Darfur Regional Government, who is active in ensuring food security for the population of the region through number of initiatives and unconventional ideas that suit the emergency conditions that a number of people are going through in the states of Sudan, including the states of Darfur, due to the rebellion of the Rapid Support militia.
The seminar discussed two papers, the first on food security in Sudan, presented by Dr. Abla Malik, and the second: proposals and visions for achieving food security in Darfur, presented by Dr. Mubarak Othman Hamdan.
The seminar witnessed a high-ranking presence from ministries, commissions, the Secretariat of the Economic Sector in the Council of Ministers, the Employers’ Union, and the Chamber of Commerc, Red Sea University, Ministry of Agriculture in the Red Sea State, leaders from the General Intelligence Service’s Economic Security, major agricultural companies, United Nations organizations and international organizations working in the field of food security, leaders from the Sudanese Working Abroad, Refugees’ Commissioner, civil society organizations, academic experts and researchers.
The opening session was addressed by Mr. Babiker Hamdeen, Minister of Health and Social Welfare – Acting Governor of the Region.
The forum resulted in a variety of comprehensive recommendations that will be handed to the Governor of the Darfur region
