A US State Department spokesman told the Saudi Al-Sharq TV channel: “The United States is aware of the ongoing talks between Russia and the Sudanese Armed Forces regarding the establishment of a Russian logistics center in Port Sudan, and considers that Russia and President Vladimir Putin are facing increasing isolation due to the deliberate and unjustified war against Ukraine, adding that (if the military regime in Sudan decides to continue implementing the Port Sudan Agreement, this will contradict with Sudan’s long-term interests and the aspirations of the Sudanese people to end the war.
He warned against moving forward with concluding this maritime agreement or any other type of security cooperation with Russia, because this will lead to deepening the current conflict and further destabilization in the region.
On September 27, 2022
the Sudanese newspaper Al-Tayyar published news about the American ambassador to Khartoum, John Godfrey, warning the Sudanese government of the repercussions if it allowed the establishment of a Russian military facility on the Red Sea in the east of the country. Godfrey said, in an interview with the newspaper, “We followed news reports revealing Russia’s efforts to implement a previous agreement with former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2017, continuing “It is important to say that international isolation around Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently increasing due to the unjustified invasion of Ukraine.
Godfrey warned that if the government of Sudan decides to move forward with establishing this facility or renegotiating it, it will be harmful to the interests of Sudan, adding that this would lead to more isolation of Sudan at a time when most Sudanese want to become closer to the international community, affirming that all countries have a sovereign right to choose other countries with which to establish partnerships, but these choices have consequences.
Godfrey said that his country wants to be a partner with Sudan, and US can be a good partner, but the key that opens the door to greater cooperation between the American and Sudanese governments is the formation of a new government with civilian leadership and a transitional framework that will restore the democratic transition in Sudan.
Godfrey is the godfather of the Framework a
Agreement, and he was always insisting on proceeding with it regardless of the deep differences it raised.
He was an instigator for his country against political and civil forces, simply because they expressed their positions on the framework and opposed it.
He is one of the architects of the security and military reform workshop which destroyed all opportunities for reform
It led our country to war.
By comparing the content of the two statements, we notice that American policy did not change eithet before or after the war to the extent that the two statements are identical,
The US State Department must answer first, and reveal how American weapons reached the Rapid Support Militia, and what is its information about the fact that Abu Dhabi is offering these weapons in the free zone to anyone who wants to buy? How do Javelin missiles, which are not sold to countries outside NATO, reach the Rapid Support Militia?
The American position is inconsistent regarding the situation in Sudan. While the State Department adheres to the positions of Godfrey, and envoy Tom Perriello, in hostility to the government and political and civil forces that support the armed forces, the Pentagon and some decision makers in Congress are stepping aside towards dealing with the Sudanese government as representing legitimacy.
