Narcissistic Acts: Famine of the year 6th is reoccurring!

By: Alaa Babiker

Sudan used to be classified as The World’s Food Basket, and yet the country had many famines occurring in the past, either in some parts or in all parts of Sudan. The most famous one which affected the entire country was the Famine of the year Sixth; whereas the reason for this name (famine of the year six) is because it occured in the year 1306 AH, corresponding to the year 1888/1889 in the Gregorian calendar, in which group of factors helped cause the famine to occur, including political and social factors, in addition to other factors related to the climate as well.

The photo describes famine events occurring in Sudan in 1306 AH / 1889 AD, taken from the book (The Sword and the Fire).

Historically some of the main actions that led to the famine of the year 6th was Khalifa Abdullah Al-Taayshi’s campaigns on the countrysides, targeting farmers and recruiting them to join his army (resembling the RSF in recruiting children and youth – tempting them by money, or by using force; as told in some real stories of people who were chained to seats and threatened to fight against the SAF inside the Capital – all just to have more Armed members to win this war for the sake of the devil apparently).

Another factor that helped in the famine of the year 6th was Drought. Looking at this factor in today’s war; we can notice that the water of the greatest River Nile in Sudan has not been used properly since the war started! People are making and using the water of wells inside some areas of the Capital just to have water availability. The Water and Electricity Authority has not been working for more than 8 months, as it is for all government authorities inside the Capital. This is a different kind of Drought! It is about the shortage of the main life savers; water, electricity, food, and shelter.

The third – but not last – factor that helped the famine of the year 6th to occur was Natural and Human Factors. Today’s climate change and global warming are making great effects everywhere in the world and Sudan is no exception. Cold waves are striking the people who live in the open with no mercy. Old people and children are dying due to food shortage as mentioned by reports released by international organizations, all because food supplies are strictly prohibited to get passed to certain areas (human actions!). And yet the two fighting armies are still getting backups from other countries to continue this war for the sake of one winner hopefully! And though after the winning of one Army; what would be left to rule?! Who would be left to develop Sudan?! And who will be left to be ruled?!

The international society is asked to urgently interfere before we reach the level of the famine of the year 6th again!

Lets pray to God to grant mercy and wisdom upon our leaders to end this war.
