Social media in Times of War:

By:  Ali  Nour

Since the start of war in Khartoum almost seven months ago, reports and news on social media have become the prime source of information for many people in the country.
But the problem with such news on various social media platforms is that most of the content can not be verified, thus leading to disinformation being widely disseminated. Both SAF and the RSF are competing to control the online narrative.
The problem of fake news and the use of artificial intelligence technology is continuing to add more confusion among citizens caught in the middle of the conflict.
The RSF heavily relied on tweets and inauthentic behaviour to spread its agenda and influence local and international opinion before Twitter closed down its page on the platform. One of the most tragic consequences is that such practices endanger the most vulnerable.
During times of war, when access to necessities like food and water is limited, people often rely on information from official sources on social media as a lifeline.
