RSF Disinformation Network Busted in Maddani
The authorities have recently arrested a network of individuals who are associated with the Rapid Support Forces. These individuals were actively engaged in media disinformation in the city of Wad Medani, located south of Khartoum. The group resided in an apartment in the “Al Darajah neighborhood” and collectively managed a large number of social media pages and accounts to spread fake news and incite within a wide-scale disinformation campaign.
Facebook management had previously accused the Rapid Support Forces of operating disinformation networks related to Wagner Group and other Russian companies.
In 2020, the Sudanese transitional government tightened sanctions related to false news that violated public order. The charge of media disinformation is punishable by up to seven years in prison. However, opposition activists from the Forces for Freedom and Change prevented the legislation from specifically criminalizing media disinformation. At the same time, this controversy coincided with accusations against the Rapid Support Forces of media disinformation.
“According to journalist Maki Al-Maghrabi, the detention of individuals without a trial may give the impression of an attack on media freedom. Al-Maghrabi suggests that the importance of security measures taken in Khartoum is questionable, particularly given the context of war and a shortage of courts. The journalist argues that this is not accurate, as many states have not seen war yet their public services, including the legal system and public prosecution, operate without issue.
Furthermore, Al-Maghrabi believes that the management of media disinformation campaigns has led to a bitter conflict between Russia and Western nations in West Africa and the Sahel region. According to the journalist, this has resulted in Russian companies consolidating their control over three countries: the Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, and Mali, where demonstrators have raised the Russian flag and rejected Western influence.
On the other hand, the West, specifically the United States, became involved in Sudan through the “Jeddah” platform, extending their support to the Rapid Support Forces and their associated disinformation networks to restore their status following a loss of local popular opinion.
Al-Maghrabi explains that the African Center for Strategic Studies, aligned with the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., was aware of these media disinformation campaigns before the onset of war, and desired to address them. However, the Biden administration seems to be demonstrating leniency towards some wealthy countries at the expense of stability in the region, which is seeing a swelling Russian influence.
