SMS: Short-term ceasefire is a positive step

By:Ali Nour Addeen
The short-term ceasefire agreement signed by the army and the RSF in Jeddah is definitely a positive step and represents a glimpse of hope as stated by the Saudi Foreign minister. What is important now is whether the warring factions will have the strong will to build on this truce and reach a permanent cessation of hostilities. This short truce is intended for allowing humanitarian assistance to reach civilians who are trapped in their homes and can not venture out to seek food or medical treatment. The traumatized residents in Khartoum and elsewhere are in dire need of such a respite to take a breath and pick up the pieces of their shuttered lives. Others who fled the fighting should also be able to return to their already ransacked homes. Meanwhile, police should intensify their campaigns to keep law and order in the streets of the capital. The horrible incidents of rape, random killing and robbery at gunpoint must end. Such incidents will only hurt innocent civilians and tarnish the image of Sudanese who are well-known worldwide for their honesty, integrity, dignity, generosity and tolerance.
