The Sudanese and South Sudanese sides must engage again in dialogue to resolve the issue of Abyei: UN Envoy Says

The UN Secretary-General’s Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Hannah Tita, urged the Sudanese and South Sudanese sides to engage again in dialogue to resolve the issue of the Abyei area, in a way that supports peace, prosperity and development for the people of the region.

“I think it is very important to begin the process of re-engaging Abyei, and I know that until the revolution in Sudan there has been no movement on the Abyei issue since 2013. It is expected that when the parties engage after a long time, it will take some time for the issues to be resolved and discussed in more detail, she said.

She called on both governments to exert more time and effort to end this process, stressing that both the Office of the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and the United Nations Interim Security Force (UNSEF) led by UNSFA, Major General Benjamin Olofemi, will do their utmost to support this process.
