A Clarifying Statement

A committee was formed to defend Dr. Yassir Mirghani, headed by Mr. Motaz Al-Madani. Other members of the committee include: Azhari Al-Teraifi, Iman Al-Mak, Rehab Mubarak, and Igbal Ahmed.
A statement issued by the defending team said the filed charges are false ones, made by the General Registrar of Voluntary Work Organizations, and were dropped several times. And because they found nothing against Dr. Yassir, they went back to records of 2011, where they found a sum of money received by the Association from the European Union. The statement said that before reviewing the matter with the Union, they filed charges, and Dr. Yassir was arrested without bail pending the deposit of 164,000 Euros.
The statement added that the defence team submitted a request to accept a real estate mortgage instead of the deposite but the team is still waiting for a final decision in this matter.
On the other hand, a request to dismiss the charges was submitted to the Public Prosecutor along with a request demanding the prosecution papers ( one for the purpose on the urgent release of Dr. Yassir from prison, and the other on dropping the charges).
The defence statement went to say that the charges were made to satisfy personal intentions, as the European Union made it clear that the money was spent according to the specified area of disbursement and under the supervision, knowledge and review of the Union. To clarify the issue the Union will provide the defence team with a full written report through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition, the money is not a public grant, and the Registrar has no capacity to file such charges as there is no crime here committed by Dr. Yassir.
The statement said after all, the defending committee dosn’t need financial support but moral support and some media pressure.
