The Beja Council announces the closure of eastern Sudan in rejection of the political agreement

Khartoum 28 March 2023 – The Supreme Council of Beja Spectacles, the wing of the Hadandawa tribe, Mohamed Al-Amin Turk, decided to close eastern Sudan in conjunction with the signing of the framework agreement next Saturday.

The military and political forces involved in the political process decided to sign the final agreement early next month, to be followed by the signing of the draft transitional constitution on April 6, in preparation for the formation of a civilian government on the 11th of the same month.

Yesterday, the Beja Council held a meeting in Port Sudan, the capital of the Red Sea state, in eastern Sudan. It said in a statement, received by Sudan Tribune, that it decided to “inform transportation agents, travel and institutions that it will close all entrances and exits of the eastern Sudan region, for one day, on the first of April.”

The statement stressed that the ongoing political process “cannot proceed without resolving the issues of eastern Sudan”, calling on the army, the RSF, the police and the General Intelligence Service to stand at the same distance from everyone.
