800,000 cases of schizophrenia in the country

The Citizen – Khartoum

Specialists in psychiatry and neurology in Khartoum revealed a shocking statistic of cases of schizophrenia, which exceeded 800,000 cases across the country.

Dr. Ali Baldo, a consultant in psychiatry, neurology and addiction treatment, said that the seriousness of the disease is represented in the presence of delusions and misconceptions among the patients. In addition to the presence of auditory hallucinations and other things that may lead to committing crimes, such as killing spouses and families, attacking others, self-harm, suicide, disorientation, disappearance, and threatening family and disrupting social peace and security.

Dr. Baldo called on families to show patients for treatment with specialists, away from fears of stigma, which lead to the paths of quackery and sorcery. Addressing that early treatment helps a lot in more and faster improvement.

Dr. Baldo elaborated that there are large number of schizophrenic patients who are being chained and imprisoned in bad conditions, which is a violation of the patient’s rights and human dignity, and that exacerbates his condition and increases the complications of the disease, which can be treated as he mentioned.
