The Sudanese Coalition for Education for All and the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education stand in solidarity with the Syrian and Turkish peoples
The Sudanese Coalition for Education for All and the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education expressed their solidarity, sympathy and condolences to the brothers in Syria and Turkey, and wished the injured a speedy recovery, as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck the territories of the two countries last Monday morning.
We in the Sudanese Coalition for Education for All, the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education and the Arab Campaign for Education for All confirm that they have closely followed the unfortunate events in the Republic of Turkey and the Syrian Arab Republic, following the earthquake that resulted in the death of more than 4,365 people, as the number of victims in Syria alone reached more than 1,444 people, according to data from the Syrian Ministry of Health and relief and rescue teams, and about 3,411 injured, in addition to the collapse of more than 80 people. A large building, about 2,400 buildings were completely or partially damaged and cracked. These numbers of casualties are constantly increasing as a result of slow rescue operations and limited capabilities in the affected areas of Syria.
The Sudanese Coalition for Education for All, the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education and the Arab Education for All view with great seriousness the slow efforts of the international emergency response to help Syria face the effects of the devastating earthquake, especially in the delivery of aid to the affected and directly affected areas, and support rescue efforts in them, where the rescue operation is exposed to many obstacles, the first of which is the obstruction of rain and snow the efforts of rescuers, and the lack of mechanisms for rescuing people under the rubble, and sanctions constitute the main obstacle to the access of these machines to the affected areas.
The Arab Campaign for Education for All also calls on the Sudanese Coalition for Education for All and the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches all those in need in line with humanitarian principles. Many Syrians are now left homeless among collapsed buildings in the rain and snow, amid freezing temperatures and countless numbers trapped under the rubble. The time has come for solidarity.
On the other hand, the Arab Campaign for Education for All, the Sudanese Coalition for Education for All and the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education call on international and UN institutions to take action to protect education in Syria and activate protocols for the protection of education in emergencies and crises, including the provision of international support and funding to ensure the continuation of the educational process in the affected Syrian areas, the rehabilitation of schools and educational institutions in those areas, and ensuring the safety of students and educational staff and their return to school as soon as possible.
