Ministry of Agriculture Plans to Achieve Food Security by Expanding Cultivation

The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Irrigation in Khartoum State, Siral-Khatim Fadul Al-Mula Abdul-Latif, has affirmed his ministry’s keenness to achieve food security through expanding cultivation in the irrigated and rain-fed sectors.
He said in statements to SUNA that the ministry’s plan focuses on the agricultural seasons (summer, rainy season and winter) at an area which currently amounts to 800,000 feddans out of the total arable area in the state, estimated at 1.8 million feddans.
The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that the irrigated areas are estimated at 400,000 feddans, out of which 141,500 feddans are irrigated projects as the big companies have 95,400 feddans and the cooperative societies have 26.77 feddans, in addition to small area estimated at 107,000 feddans at the state’s local level.
Siral-Khatim stated that the ministry aims to increase the irrigated and rain-fed area to exploit all the arable areas in Khartoum state to increase production, as well as the use technologies to increase productivity of the one feddan to achieve food security in the state.
He pointed out that the ministry is working to encourage agriculture, farms, productive forests and goat breeding for the needy families to enhance food security and youth employment.
He spoke about the ministry’s efforts, in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure, to establish and rehabilitate roads to facilitate the movement, referring to the maintenance of some roads in the Western Soba and Seleit schemes
